replaced (versions)

by Andrew S Adams

I had a great love (once)
but things are strange,
as never before.
Your 'fall to love' was
all too sudden.
you and i are
distsant. detached.

What caused you to change your ways-
i thought you were pure.
how can you be so lost in an abyss?
whatever the infliction, death is not the cure.
you try and try to drink it all away
when we both know down deep, that answer is a lie.
the bones are coming, jabbing into your skin
but you keep fighting a war you know you cant win.

why do you keep your silence
from the ones who care the most?
we can still see you hiding,
as your words have stopped flowing altogether.

this is becoming a bitter friendship;
you and i are torn apart by another.
you cry emptiness, loss
self pity and loathing;
but i see no point for you
to make of those.
it may be my hands slipping,
but this evades the point.
you're not gone to life,
but you're gone to me.

on. off. on. off. on. off.
this lightswitch, jumping up and down
and neither of us can stop;
soon, the bulb will burn out.
in the darkness, you hide.
bitterness, anger, pain
it all numbs itself into your psyche.

but remember, i'm in the same room,
searching for a candle.

in the light, where we burn down a wick
closer to the end,
we find happiness together,
you and i- we're friends.
laughing hysterically at the dumbest things
you fly with me
and give me wings.

how will it all end?
eventually,
all things have to give out.
burn out. fade away.
let me know when you need
to be replaced.
