Blooms of May (Villanelle)

by Amanda Conlogue

Slowly, you drifted away
while flowers burst into bloom
I never told you I wanted you to stay

believe me, I have dearly paid
for staking a claim on the silvery moon
slowly, you drifted away

my nights are lonely, looking over the bay
thoughts of you are huge in the afternoon
I never told you I wanted you to stay

I dreamt of us as children at play
I woke, you were gone, our absence looms
slowly, you drifted away

I wish that there was a way
to have back our love in full bloom
I never told you I wanted you to stay

I will celebrate my birthday in May
while flowers burst into bloom
I never told you I wanted you to stay
so, slowly, you drifted away
