walk down a crowded street

by Gary Hoffmann

walk down a crowded street
past a dozen strangers I'll never meet
beautiful strangers
I've had too much coffee, perhaps
or not enough sleep
guy with a mohawk
deaf girl talking to
an interpreter I recognize
but don't know
my arch nemesis
a poet like myself
unlike myself
radio distracts me
can't think don't want to
she's beautiful but then I
have a thing for redheads
too much caffeine I can feel
it increasing heartbloodpressureconsciousness
I should talk to her
anxiety
what do I say? how about hello
tiredawaketoomuchcaffeinenotenoughsleep
I want to fly
run fight
talk to her
hidden behind my enemyfriend
dizzy
sleep?
no
