so this is my life by Gary Hoffmannso this is my life
a life spent along on cold, dark winter nights
watching the snowfall and drinking coffee
in some half-remembered diner
that simply happens to be open
gazing out the window to see a million
tiny snowflake lives extinguished suddenly
because the ground is still too warm
so this is my life
a life spent listening to overheard conversations
wishing I had the courage to walk up to
someone I've never met before
and introduce myself
promising myself that, god dammit,
next time I will
only to fail in my resolve again, again
a life where in my imagination
I've met thousands of people and
become lifelong friends with them
but I'll never say a word
and five minutes later I'll never see them again
so this is my life
a life spent jealous of otehr peoples' talent
because I can't draw or paint or sing
or play the piano
a life spent wishing I could break down
the blocks that inhibit my creativity
because I've been taught not to think for myself
a life spent looking back at times
I should've been more assertive
because if I can't change the world
I can at least change my life
so this is my life
a life spent not changing it
