stargazing

by Gary Hoffmann

bluepurple hues of autumn twilight
dark shadows of trees and lost forevers
stars lonely and cold in a desolate evening
the moon bright and outlining a few
stray angelic wisps of clouds
dying quickly as the wind
sends them back to forgotten dreams
but my breath takes their place
ancient cities of silver and mist
float invisibly (almost)
between the shadows of the constellations
as beautiful and impossible as
an eternity with you
the cosmos dance their siren song
of gorgeous unknown hues
mocking my incapacity to join them
and whisper inaudibly the thousand
names of God
