moonlight dances across an empty field

by Gary Hoffmann

moonlight dances across an empty field
of grass and snow and fog
as I silently watch the night,
hoping for some dying sortilege
to guide me to you.
my breath coalesces into mist,
rising from my soul to take the shape of beauty,
and I see your face before me
only to disappear into the darkness
as a soft wind blows,
reminding me of the bitter cold of winter
or any day spent without you.
I remember how you once told me
you’d keep me warm as we watched
the snow fall,
but as I look to either side
I’m not met by your eyes,
your beautiful eyes as deep as oceans,
staring back at me.
where are you, then,
that I could shout to the heavens
and you would not hear me?
where are you, then,
that I could wail against the boundaries of time
and still be met with only silence?
where are you, then,
that the only way I can see your eyes
is by their reflection in the sky
as you look up at the stars?
fly to me
and take me to your paradise of darkness,
the concealer of the sins of men.
fly to me and whisper
of things hidden in your heart
as we float above the rivers of Babylon.
speak to me
and save me from the dreadful hush of my soul,
as I stand amidst the frozen winds of eternity,
waiting.
