Midnight by Gary HoffmannMidnight, my only companion,
walking in front of me
across my vision
standing there, before my eyes
and then leaving
only to return again, as darkness must,
why must I be stuck here
dreaming of so far away
beauty unobtainable
desire unfulfillable
separated by miles and
years uncountable?
Midnight, your eyes are now
the only ones I look upon
as you stare at me
with infinite understanding
born of knowledge
as old as life
Angels are too far away to kiss
and eternity will wait for Zion
before I can enter the gates of paradise;
even Death demands a journey
lupine orbs stare at me
as Midnight purifies the world
and candles burn
slowly exhausting themselves of life
as I watch the snow
through the darkened glass
that looks out upon my frozen soul
lick the blood from gnarled hands
as desolation becomes redemption
and laugh as minute by minute
I become just another dead poet
