Future Arrangements

by Mallory Henson

(An Abecedarian)

...Afterwards, I realize that we are
bound to be only a jacket of dust
collecting on the shoulders of those who
drain the color from our eyes.
Even if they shrug, we will cling to their
fragile collar bones: a chain on their neck
growing longer as they wall themselves up.
How is it that we have come to this division,
ignoring the pointed preface of their stares?
Just months ago, we were perfectly placed,
kept our secrets inside of each other,
lay down the feet of our absences in the
middle of this. We were elegantly spaced.

Now, in this cowled hour, I know there is no
order to this madness, no silence, no
place that we can go to disappear
quietly into the backboard of the night;
really, we are alone and anxious.
Sure, there are some days we will argue
that this is only a phase, a short breath, an
uncertainty that will always fade,
vanish into the blackness and
waver out, but the exits have been blocked,
‘x’s placed over our eyes. We are dark inside.
Years from now, we will know one brightness, a
zero hour when we cling together again.

This is honestly the first abcedarian I have ever read. I imagine it's all downhill from here. Excellent work, and welcome to Pathetic. :)

Oh, and I forgot to mention, this is excellent, considering it is in an Abecedarian form, really, it is just outstanding---every line

I'm not a fan of the form, but you've done wonders with it! Welcome to Pathetic

Wow. Welcome to Pathetic indeed. I haven't been hanging around lately and I can see I've missed much. Congrats on getting top rated this deifintely deserved it.

The second stanza I loved more than the first. But both were great. Your words paint such haunting pictures and the consistency of theme runs firmly through your verse. And you capture emotion which(if the evidence is not enough) proves your write to be poetry indeed. I'm not sure how an Abecedarian works exactly but this is definitely a good one. Well done!

Great poem... Excellent use of the form to the point that it's format is secondary.
