Your Going Away by Philip F De Pinto
I didn't know what else to say
To prevent your going away
So I leaped in a pool of tears
Who could not swim a stroke
And what did she toss me
Who was drowning in a pool of tears?
But what she found in her purse
Which was a mint lifesaver
But what she found in her cereal bowl
Which was a cheerio
But what she found on her finger
Which was a wedding ring
I didn't know what else to say
To prevent your going away
But I rest my head on the pool's bottom
Content you did your best to prevent my going away

| Posted by Michele Schottelkorb on 07/04/09 at 03:24 PM Mr. De Pinto... It has been a spell... Gone away from your words have I... To return to you changed, but not changed at all... Thank God. Poignant, sad and brilliant... I pray this is written from an outside perspective-for it is that affecting... |

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 09/22/09 at 11:25 AM This is so heavy with sadness and grief expressed with almost suffocating impact with the pool metaphor. Brilliant way to express how a loss seems to drain the oxygen. I was about to get into some anger toward her when you - in true pintoish fashion - lowered the boom of truth in the last line. Always reciprocal - relationships, yes? Thanks Phil. |
