My Mother's Daughter by Wendy Sparling
My Mother, elegant in her basic black dress,
opened her favorite embossed jewel case.
Her delicate fingers plucked a blue rhinestone
necklace from its white satin sanction,
and then she asked for my help with the clasp.
I climbed atop my parent's pine bench,
and carefully slid the sleeve to home,
then ogled at the prisms as they glimmered
like diamonds on her long silken throat.
My Mother was beautiful with slate blue eyes
and powdered nose, as she bent over and
kissed me on the forehead.
The past memory is dear to my heart,
as I thumb through old photo albums.
A deep seeded memory of myself,
dressed like a damsel with high heels
and frilly bordered knit gloves, and
wishing I could be as lovely as my Mother.

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 06/29/09 at 12:36 PM The words flow gently, lovingly, and longingly. What a cool connection between what and who your mother was, what and who you are, and your dreams. Your poem is as delicate and lovely as that necklace on your mother's silken throat. Delightful, Wendy. |
