Another You And Me

by Gregory O'Neill

Some nights I can still see you
Standing there on the steps
Though all our times have come and gone
There are some moments that I’ve kept
And I know your dreams have faded
And my dreams have faded too
There was a time we would have waited
Maybe there’s still no time to lose

I keep thinking how we used to laugh
And how we sometimes cried
How we held onto each other
And how we both ignored the lies
But I’ll be the first to admit
To taking that first wrong step
and draw back the stinging slap of time
learn about forgiving and you’ll learn to forget

But don’t ever think we can’t still count the stars
Don’t ever think the road won’t go that far
Don’t ever think you’re not all I ever wanted you to be
And don’t ever think love doesn’t need another you and me
Another you and me

And all these miles have just made it very clear
Your wounded heart is what’s behind my tears
Even in a world that much prefers the silence
It’s a lover’s heart must echo love’s defiance

But don’t ever think we can’t still count the stars
Don’t ever think the road won’t go that far
Don’t ever think you’re not all I ever wanted you to be
And don’t ever think love doesn’t need another you and me
Another you and me

I can’t not want my name upon your lips
And if we were once more to chance a kiss
I know the words would tumble out and we would tumble too
Into love’s expectation of what both our true hearts knew

I promise to listen closer, to really hear this time
What you need from me
Now the sun of this new day is like the warmth from wine
And when I see it shining in your eyes, I know that’s all I’ll ever need

Beautiful Greg..You've got me believing in counting stars again..both full of hope and wishes..whoever said to dream would be wrong? A favorite of mine!

Yes, beautifully put Greg. I'm sure anyone who has ever been in love can relate to it in his or her own way.

I really like the song feel to this. You've done a great job at capturing your emotions and true feelings here. This is sure to sweep your love off her feet and into your arms.

What a song, what a starry night, speaks of youth to me and a long ago and you are right, never another like it. smh

This masterpiece of love knocked me off my chair. I am so moved, whoever this work is meant for, must be powerless over this deep-deep-deep passion. NICE!

"Even in a world that much prefers the silence
It’s a lover’s heart must echo love’s defiance"
are my favorite lines of this marvelous love poem. Simply beautiful.

Greg, this is drenching in authenticity, most heart-opening and mind-opening, I really particularly like

"But don’t ever think we can’t still count the stars
Don’t ever think the road won’t go that far"

These are the most touching, gorgeous lyrics I've read in forever. It feels like you've told my story, right here, in his words.

I love the redemption in this poem, the forgiveness, the regret, and the hope of enduring love. I am grateful for your honesty, your openness and giftedness as a poet. Thanks for this lovely poem.
