a story that needs to be told.

by Natalie Jones

Trying to put the way I feel about you
into words for a song
with a melody so plain and so clear.

It I told you the true stories, you would come to understand
me as a girl who knows that laughter is the same
sound as sadness, that my days were full of waiting
for this longing to pass.

And while we are at it, let's talk about suffering.

In order to combat the silence,
we must collect these moments
into a tapestry
to lay across our laps--
a blanket of tiny reasons
for why it might be worth it
to stay alive.

I met you and something changed. You called it
significant and you called it honest.
Sometimes I wonder could it have merely been
time, could it have just been coincidence.

I want you to know
that you are an opportunity for growth
and I am your love letter to
ambition and despite all this longing
and in the face of all this fear--

The beauty of I as I and you as you.
The terrible pain of we. The inevitability.
The surrendering.
