drain the sap

by Jeremy Magee

Today is the swift and unnerving collusion
of silence and darkening pools of water,

leaving me a naked tree on a breezy day,
trees around me shedding their light, bright clothing.

Nature herself unsheaths a sword of bronze
and cuts the twine holding me up to our vast, cerulean dome.

I cannot find my lover in the deepening din,
where people are strange and the music doesn't work anymore.

My roots choked with water, I have all of the time
this world could beg for, but none of the love, a dying tree in plain view.

Damn near chilling in those last lines. Great work.
