Sudden Storm

by Rafika Anderson

On the day that you left
the hazy shield of heaven darkened with gloom at sunrise
fierce thunder pounded ceaselessly upon the open land
charging in from the restless sea
resounding heavily
against the backdrop of the ancient mountain range
bowling against the trembling walls of manmade structures
from the mysterious limits of the white city
down to the welcoming shore
rough winds whisked away
the accumulated dust and sand of yesteryear
as smoky clouds broiled above
pouring forth a river of rain
turning peach twilight midday to darkest night
proving that even the gods shed precious tears

It's true. Beautiful. It's a shame so few see it so.

A powerful vision and a tragic loss.

Rafika, you combine the response of heaven to the response of the people, as metaphors, showing how a nation and many others mourned. The contrasting colors of life to death, dark to light, against the backdrop of cities and mountains, passes for the rise and fall of everyday life, but in this case, more universally known. In this unforseen tragedy, so many lives were changed, not just in the event's immediate environment, but spread like ripples, no more like tsunamis, around the world.
