desire for color by Jeremy Magee
i desire the color of this day
to burn a hole in my arms and slide
into my muscles to glow with
a blue-purple light;
if only to wait until the evening,
to make a small incision under the base
of my thumb, a coffee cup
resting underneath.
Then I could dip my quill into the cup,
a red and black and blue murky spirit dripping
from the bone-ivory tip,
recalling the day.
Anemia will set in, the hundreth page finished,
leaves have been drawn in true colors, my face now ivory,
i forget my own manners, falling down,
and dying in the middle of winter.
