Flowers for You

by Natalie Jones

I can’t stand to listen to love songs tonight—
December, driving toward your face.
To think of you so often is often
discouraging. Your anatomy drawing me
in & separating us. This flower. Stem of
thorns; your spine.

To think of you in the morning
cup of coffee. Lips to the rim. Your eyes
at the bottom. The outside light beginning
to come inside. Yellow light, stone mug.

Trying to learn patience this year:
to cry out the sadness, wait out the loneliness.
To train my eyes on your gaze. Not flinching
when the breeze blows because breezes
will blow.

They say you shouldn’t look to others to
save you but I have always looked to others
to save me.

Dressed your wrists in flower petals.
The love songs are all about heartbreak.
We are all about love songs so maybe
we are all about heartbreak.
Can’t stand to listen to the songs tonight.
