Sihem Reads Aloud by Rafika AndersonA lone green olive tree
craving the heat of the midmorning sun
overshadowed by the bright promenade
of jacaranda, flamboyant, and fougere
towering confidently
in their season of resplendent bloom
surrounded by "karmous" ripening on flat cacti leaves
tempting scarlet fruit
hearkening to your pouting lips
and deceptively soft voice
coquettish in its delicate appeal
but bearing a hidden sting
Your heart
a cool stone mansion
dominating a landscape of dry, blood hot sand
your eyes great lakes of obscure still waters
reflect your thoughts -- sheep
grazing across the broad campus of your mind
like sleeping uncut jewels
fearing the harvest
